Fluff is NOT water-soluble; plant is perennial (you can see previous year’s growth); leaf margins are not white; plant growth-form is clumpy, not spreading and stoloniferous (though there are occasional stolon-like projections that hadn't rooted).

Russian wildrye is restricted to the trailsides in the mountain big sagebrush steppe at the base of the Carson Range, Thomas Creek drainage, Washoe County, Nevada.

Russian wildrye is an introduce perennial bunchgrass often growing in open dry areas where the vegetation has been reclaimed or in some manner highly disturbed. The basal leaf bunch is usually well developed except when growing in dense stands. The bunched habit with mostly basal leaf production (i.e., few stem leaves), combined with a classic Elymus seed head architecture (i.e., short narrow glumes not aligned with the adjacent lemmas), and hirsute lemmas distinguish this species.
