Was surprised and delighted to find this old warrior at the FTW Botanic Gardens today.

Last time I came to this small pond, I found 3 yellow mud turtles, so this is very likely a repeat sighting

This guy/gal looked ancient.

I have encountered this individual on multiple occasions. She is recognizable by the cracked notch on her right shoulder and has a rather cantankerous disposition for a box turtle.

Safely moved across the road in the direction already headed.

Juvenile captured while swimming.

Field Notes - Ok, i think this time i got the Sonoran Mud Turtle. There were abt 8 of them surfacing periodically. They appear to be 5-7 inches in length. Quite eager to avoid any motion i made.

Second mud turtle species I’ve encountered in the wild. Beautiful little Sonoran mud turtle.

Sabino Canyon, Coronado National Forest, in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, AZ.

Found crossing road, placed in woods in original direction of travel.

Baby turtle/tortoise

A male and female mud turtle found next to each other in a shallow roadside ditch. Male was trailing female, probably interested in mating.

Hatchling mud turtle. Roughly nickel size. Found swimming in a shallow puddle at John Crompton Park.

Not 100% on this ID; could be Sternotherus odoratus. Foolishly did not think to get plastron photos.

This small, dark turtle was in a small pond in an oak woodland quite near the coastal marshes. I don't know the species. The shell was ca 6 inches long.
