Observation Fields Guide

There are several observation fields and at least 2 should be populated when adding an observation to the project.

  • IF there are separate observations for the prey/predator or parasite/prey interaction, link the two via the URL for "partner" observation field.
  • If there is only one observation in which a caterpillar is being parasitized or otherwise preyed upon, either leave that observation field blank, or duplicate the observation and link the two via the field.
  • Interaction->Prey ID should be populated IF the observation is of a caterpillar that is being eaten, or otherwise utilised as food source (e.g. catterpillar in a beak of a bird, caterpillar being carried away by a predatory wasp or caterpillar eaten by a spider).
  • Interaction->Predator ID should be populated IF the observation is of a predator killing, eating or carrying Lepidopteran larva in order to utilise it as food source (e.g. bird eating a caterpillar, predatory wasp carrying a caterpillar or spider eating a caterpillar)
  • Interaction->Host ID should be populated IF the observation is of a caterpillar that is being parasitized (e.g. caterpillar from which vasp or fly larvae emerged, caterpillar covered in vasp cocoons).
  • Interaction->Parasite ID should be populated IF the observation is of a parasite or its larvae that was found in, on, or emerging from a Lepidopteran larva.

Stats - February 2024

This project has existed for almost a year now, and though adding observations to it is a rather manual and slow-going task, I'm hoping we can at least double the number of observations during 2024.

The purpose of the project is to record the variety of species that utilize Lepidopteran larvae in particular, and in the process keep the numbers in check. Current stats are as follows:

Predator/parasite      Number of Observations

Parasitic wasps           42
Birds                                   41
Flies                                    22
Ants                                    17
Predatory wasps        16
Spiders                              7
Mantids                            3
Lizards                               3
Assassin Bugs              2
Hister beetles               1
Crabs                                  1
Mammals                        1

As to the strangest natural caterpillar control measure on the project so far, I think KZN River Crab
(Potamonautes sidneyi) feeding on Tailed Emperor (Urota sinope) by @kevin2226 takes the cake.
