Story #5
One day in late summer on the hot, African plains, a female cheetah was stalking a gazelle. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, she saw a male charging toward her, his horns pointed. She whisked off like quicksilver, the buck pursuing. But he became tired, and pranced back to the herd. Now that the herd was alert, the female cheetah could not hunt. So she walked back to an acacia tree, where she purred, soft, loving sounds, to her three cubs. They came, tugging at her tail, sprawling all over, asking for food. But she had nothing to give them. Even worse, the same thing had happened yesterday. if this continues, the family will starve. If the mother cheetah cannot eat, she cannot make milk for the three cubs. The family is threatened. But there is a ray of hope. A female ostrich is only a few meters from the tree. Ostriches can be deadly prey. They have enough force in their leg to kill a cheetah. But, if the cheetah succeeds, it could mean enough food to last a week. Should she take the risk, or back away and starve. She boldly decides to attack. She orders the cubs to remain there, and starts stalking. Her coat blends in with the withering grass. The ostrich does not see her. She stops, waiting for the ostrich to come close enough. Then she gathers all the energy in her body and puts it in her legs. Then, jump! In a single leap she is on the ostrich's back. She tries to nip at the ostrich's neck. The ostrich is falling. She grabs at the neck, closing her deadly jaws. The ostrich kicks at her and misses by an inch. Then, it is over. The ostrich is dead. she purrs to her cubs, calling them over. They eat until their bellies are full.
