SA iNaturalists - June 2023 Update

We've Reached 500,000 Verifiable Observations!

On the 15th of June 2023 we reached 500,000 verifiable observations uploaded in South Australia!

Congratulations to all who have contributed to this milestone. The first observations in SA were uploaded around mid-2011 and had only reached 4,500 by the end of 2017. Since then however the rate has increase dramatically reaching 23,500 by end of 2018, then 66,800 by end of 2019, on to 162,400 by end of 2020, then 282,700 by end of 2021 and finally 424,537 by the end of 2022.

We surpassed 100,000 observations in May 2020. It took 9 years to reach that milestone. It took only 12 months to add the second 100,000, only 10 months to add the third 100,000, and only 8 months to add the fourth 100,000. The last 100,000 took us only 7 months! We are currently recording approximately 350 new observations each day. That's a new observation every 4 minutes, ever hour of every day! Is it possible we could add another 100,000 verifiable observations in the next 6 months?

Alas, the exponential increase in observations cannot continue forever, and has been dropping year by year. 2018 saw a 520% increase in observations, 2019 a 280% increase, 2020 a 240% increase, 2021 a 170% increase, and 2022 a 150% increase.

Data used for this post taken on the 10th of July. It excludes any observations and identifications from June that were uploaded after this date.

Geoffrey, for a state with just over one million people, we bat well above the average.

Well done us!! 😁
For a state which is often considered by others as "boring" & "nothing to see", I feel the number of species observed across our beautiful state is well worth celebrating too 🥳😁

Yes, congratulations all! The numbers suggest to me that more and more people are appreciating our very special environment here in SA which can only be a step in the right direction.

Indeed, I'm impressed that interest continues to grow. When I joined iNat in 2018 there were less than 10 regular contributors in SA. Now there are more than 500 each month, and that's in the middle of Winter. Bring on the Great Southern BioBlitz. I think some state records will fall this Spring. Thanks everyone for your contributions. Every day there are amazing records being uploaded.
