Clover Flowering Adaptation, Narrow Leaf Adaptation, Drummond's Aster Placement

  1. In my observations of clover, they have a high flower-to-stem ratio. This is a very useful adaptation for small species like clovers. Since they are less resistant to changes in climate and, given their small sizes, are prone to be stepped on or consumed by local, clovers need to have an abundance of flowers to ensure its reproduction.
  2. Although our observations are taken in Montreal and Winnipeg, most of our plants have narrow leaf. Having narrow leaves reduces moisture evaporation. For both of our locations, the climate is not exactly humid and the precipitation is not abundant. This narrow leaf adaptation helps plants to endure occasional dry weather and is very crucial for their survival.
  3. Drummond's aster, symphyotrichum drummondii, share recent ancestors with symphyotrichum burgessii, and rayless alkali aster. There most recent common ancestors include Texas sleepydaisy, dwarf rabbitbrush, viscid tansyaster and so on.
