I have worked as a botanist and vegetation ecologist in the southeastern United States for the last thirty-eight years. Agencies and private groups I have worked with include the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, the Georgia Natural Heritage Program, the National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy, the USDA Forest Service, the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance and NatureServe. Projects have included surveys for endangered and threatened species, botanical inventories of National Park properties, monitoring populations of federally endangered plants, ecological reconnaissance of National Forest Service lands, conducting accuracy assessments of vegetation maps, and establishing permanent vegetation monitoring plots for the National Park Service. Additional botanical inventory work has involved assisting the University of Georgia’s Cooperative Park Service Unit with a botanical inventory of National Seashores including Cape Lookout, Cumberland Island and Canaveral National Seashore. I have also assisted the National Park Service with a vascular plant inventory and the development of a monitoring system for Fort Pulaski National Monument. Ongoing work includes assisting NatureServe with monitoring permanent vegetation plots throughout the National Park Service’s Cumberland Piedmont Network.
