Just a passionate hobbyist with a strong desire to learn. Particularly interested in the endemic species of the Olympic Peninsula, as well as useful and edible native species in the Pacific Northwest.

I focus particularly on IDing the following:

  • Arctic Butterbur (Petasites frigidus). West of the Cascades it's only var. palmatus in the lowlands and ssp. frigidus in the mountains; with only var. palmatus in California.
  • Giant Butterbur (Petasites japonicus). A clear photo of the leaf margins is necessary to differentiate from P. hybridus without flowers.
  • Common Butterbur (Petasites hybridus). A clear photo of the leaf margin is necessary to differentiate from P. japonicus without flowers.
  • Olympic Chipmunk (Neotamias amoenus caurinus). There are Townsend's and Olympic Chipmunks at higher elevations, but only Townsend's in the lowlands. Behind the ear is whiter on Townsend's, where for Olympics it's the same color as the facial stripes. I look for 3 parallel upper facial stripes for Olympics (dark-light-dark), with the dark eye-stripe continuing forwards of the eye.
