Resting at the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, San Francisco County is the the smallest county in California, encompassing (on land) only 46.9 square miles. It encompasses the whole of the city of San Francisco including its heavily developed urban environment, Golden Gate Park, part of San Bruno Mountain State Park, Lake Merced, and miles of shoreline. It also includes the Farallon Islands which rest approximately 30 miles from the San Francisco shoreline.
