EUROMEDITERRANEAN ALIEN SPECIES is looking for collaborators

The issue of biological invasions is getting more and more concerning especially if a biodiversity rich place like the Euromediterranean area is menaced. In this light, an Euromediterranean database of observations of alien species could turn out to be a useful tool to understand which are the most common invaders as well as the most invaded areas.
The project EUROMEDITERRANEAN ALIEN SPECIES (EAS), launched in september, aims at gathering as many as possible observations of alien species in the Euromediterranean area.
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/euromediterranean-alien-species

In order to improve the monitoring of the observations added to iNaturalist new collaborators could join the project and help adding observations. A wider representativeness of the Euromediterranean users among the collaborators of the AES project will surely result in a better coverage of the observations added in iNat.

You are also kindly invited to spread the word about the EAS project.

The (few) rules of the project:
1) observations that can be added must be only of alien species, even if the species is considered alien in only one country:
2) the project deals with every kind of living beings that are observed in iNaturalist;
3) the area of interest of the project is the same of the Euro+Med Plantbase: (http://ww2.bgbm.org/EuroPlusMed/explanations.asp)
3) the observed living beings must not be cultivated or captive
4) alien species must be true aliens (observations of doubtfully alien species must not be added while archaeophytes are here considered as true aliens)

Good idea to create this project, thanks for invitation! There are lots of alien species in my home area, effectively naturalized and casual rare ones. I liked to try adding more own observations in future and will help with adding identifications. Something you will be interested in, dear colleague @nutcracker
Concerning true archaeophytes, is it really usefull to add long term naturalized species, e.g. trees which are part of recent woods?

@nutcracker also records of taxa that are native in parts of the area but alien in others

both neophytes and archaeophytes

@erwin_pteridophilos yes, also true archaeophytes. Consider, for example, Arundo donax that is an archaeophyte imported during the Roman period but also an invasive species.
Only doubtfully alien species (cryptogenic species) should be avoided

Mille grazie, thanks a lot for confirmation of project rules, Valerio!

you're welcome

Yes, but only if really spontaneous. As regards, alien trees have been often used for afforestations and reforestations. In these cases, species used for such purposes should be added to EAS only if they have somehow produced some offsprings (through seed or propagules dispersal) or have invaded the neighboring areas (e.g. through vegetative growth).
In the case of doutbuful cases (e.g. a lonely alien tree in the middle of a wood, an ornamental species growing close to a settlement, etc..) it is better to add the observation or to ask for a help

I don't live in Europe, so I won't join at this time, but tagging my sister who lives in Sweden @evahedstrom

The project seems to me not only extremely interesting and important, but also responsible and designed for a long perspective, so I'm pleased to join. Thank you. However, most likely I will be the one who asks many questions).
The question already exists - in iNat, invasive taxa (but not all) are already highlighted with a colored icon. Is there any reference to the source of this information? For example, Rapana venosa is clearly an invasive species for the Black Sea, but it is not yet displayed this way. What are my actions to fix this?

@ katya Thanks for your comment.
I do not know if the "invasive mark status" here is based on a certain reference. It would be interesting to clarify this point with the site managers, also in order to better cover as many as possible the true invasive species.
Please do not be afraid to ask. I would like the EAS project to become a place where to exchange knowledge and opinions.

Ciao Valerio, io curo la pagina Facebook di iNaturalist (insieme a due amici) posso pubblicizzare il tuo progetto sulla nostra pagina?
