While sitting outside the B&B in Tucson I saw a large Pepsis drop into the scrubby plants and I ran for the camera. Kept my distance while she was clearly patrolling for a victim. She did quite a bit of ranging and flared her wings at me several times. She would disappear under grass and into craters but re-emerge. She finally found an actual hole and disappeared down it. She was not down long before dragging up a spider that appeared to be already partially paralyzed.
She placed it aside and then paused before descending back in the hole. When she returned the spider seemed to give a slight resistance and she appeared to sting it several more times. She grasped it by the legs and in the final grab she appeared to just take it by the face or fangs and pull it down in the tunnel.
I believe this is Thisbe's and playing the odds in AZ this is a good guess. I'm sure some AZ guys will have a look.
Fucked around and found out. I would gladly get stung again just to get a better picture
Is this just a very small Pepsis? Last photo shows it compared with larger Pepsis specimens
