Spotted in neighbor’s yard. Does anyone know age of the deer on left? From other pics it appears it’s a “he,” as even tho no antlers, there seems to be base where they’d grow. Also he has what looks like healed ear injury (his right ear).
Poor guy couldn’t figure out that bird feeder, but I kept his favorite eating spots full during the storm!
This dove appeared at my feeders 4 days ago & comes every morning & vacates by mid-day. I added pic 3 of the male that showed up just today!
This beautiful male appeared for 1st time near feeders, but I think I scared him before he had a snack. He’s a big guy, very impressive in person!
The male came to visit for first time twice today & loves new feeder of smaller seeds. He doesn’t seem to mind me observing!
We mainly have downies but the hairy showed up for 1st time today! She had hard time negotiating suet feeder but finally got it after 3 min of fighting gravity sliding down pole. I tried to select photos demonstrating differences like black cap extending down into back, beak & black chest extension (& long beak).
Public enemy #1 at feeders lately! I left my tomatoes in this planter bc of the 2 mantis egg cases. I have to move planter so feeder bandit can’t reach. I’ve got his number!
2 downy woodpeckers - male in photo 1 & female in 2 & 3. Male’s beak appears longer than normal downy but spots on white tail feathers confirms downy!
Added nyjer thistle seed to seed mix in feeders & within 24hrs, goldfinches showed up!
Mockingbird came back after long hiatus when I installed water source (heated to avoid freezing). Now I’ve seen it three days in a row!
Hunting in yard again...about 10ft away!! I switched out today’s hawk visit pix for yesterday’s since these enable easier ID.
For those not familiar w/ my yard, it’s hard to tell relative size - but this hawk is >30% smaller than my Cooper’s regulars w/smaller head. It ate one of my feeder birds (junco) 😢. Last photo taken from 5’ away - it wasn’t afraid! The Cooper’s that frequent daily are much less apt to stick around when I’m outside!
Look like 1st year light juvenile red-tailed hawk. Front (not photographed bc we surprised each other) w/ dark streaks on white background. Approx 17-18” w/big wingspan (too big for Cooper’s & tail too short). Photos taken half block away w/zoom lens (200mm f2.8).
Found dead on deck under bird feeder. I’ve not seen these hornets before, much less in February!
I have not seen one since Fall 2019, but this one showed up today in a ginkgo tree.
I’ve seen plenty of other sparrow species but fox sparrow hasn’t been one of them...til this morning.
This enormous dude lives under neighbor’s deck...
Vocalization of American Crow, and size consistent. Photos taken with 70-200 f2.8 at 250 yards. Could see & hear this bird from 400 yards atop tall trees (on which I regularly see Hawks). 2x size of our common grackles & call of crow.
