Went over to Randol Mill Park at lunch today to look for some birds and other stuff.
Typical Pose
Halloween pennants are often found with their wings in this position. Reminds me of a helicopter.
What a wonderful evening at Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve with around 50 folks celebrating national moth week! Some pretty cool bugs showed up at the sheets this evening. :)
Most of the kingbirds I see here are Western Kingbirds or, at least, I assume they are. This one, however, had a different feel to it than the ones I have observed in the past. iNat included as its second species suggestion Couch's kingbird, a species I was unaware of, I looked up Couch's v Western Kingbird and found a Cornell ornithology article entitled "Comparison of Western, Tropical, and Couch's kingbird characters". See https://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/kingbirdsX.htm One distinction between species noted relates to the length and thickness of the bill. "Western has a relatively short bill, Couch's is longer, and Tropical is longest and thickest." This specimen has what appears from picture 1 to be a fairly long and fairly thick bill. Perhaps that's a distortion based on the angle from which I took this photo, or perhaps it's just wishful thinking on my part, but I am wondering if this might be a Couch's kingbird. Sightings of Couch's kingbirds in Tarrant County appear to be occasional and this is not the time of year they are likely to be seen. I am leaving this at Genus Tyrannus rather than making a species suggestion. @jimsinclair
