Milkfish (Chanos chanos).
Approx. 1m to 1.5m in lenght.
Silvery. Jumps out of the water when startled upto a metre high in the air and can clear upto 4m to 7m in a single jump.
Most likely feeding on algae and small crustaceans fond in the mangrove.
Can tolerate varying water salinity and temperature.
No other species of fish were found in the mangrove.
It is unclear how Chanos chanos ended up in Maldives. Though it is likely to have been brought by early settlers along with Tilapia as a food source. Milkfish are very bony and often used as a food source in South east Asia because they are an easy fish to farm. Another theory is that they swam here.
Milkfish were once said to have inhabited the mangrove in the near by island of Kulhudhuffushi, I have not seen any outside captivity in Kulhudhuffushi.
