On trunk of hardwood in mature mixed forest. This looks like Stictis (?) but I don't know how those conspicuous dark hairs fit into the picture.
Appears to be a liverwort in lower left.
On the upper branches of a recently fallen Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) limb. The only 'occurrence' noted.
Habitat: Overgrown upland meadow. In 2015 it was mowed, planted with trees, portions of it were brush-hogged a couple of times, and then the area was pretty much left alone. Dominated by Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora), with a lesser amount of Allegheny Blackberry (Rubus allegheniensis). The ground layer under the Multiflora Rose characteristically contains Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) and various Bryophytes. Openings area characterized by Poison Ivy and a variety of Goldenrods (Solidago spp.).
