Commonly found - as dead specimens - under hakapiri (Olearia traversiorum) logs and in titi / sooty shearwater (Ardenna grisea) burrows. No live specimens seen, however what seem to be beetle larvae were commonly found in Atriplex australasica bushes in close association with these dead specimens (sorry no images of larvae).
Hillsborough Cemetery, Hillsborough, Auckland 1042. Under loose bark on the trunk of a Eucalyptus globulus.
I did not tip this beetle over 😅 it did it to itself and I helped it back on its feet (post-photograph)
