On hummock with Sphagnum. Stems have long extensions (12 mm) with leaf-like gemmae widely spaced along the stem and clustered at apex. Leaves curled when dry, 3 mm.
On rotting log. Clusters of brood branches at branch tips. Branches with erect, appressed leaves with recurred margins. Thick-walled alar cells extend 10-20 cells up the margin.
On soil in forest. Leaves with broadly acuminate tips, strongly auricular. Upper branch leaf cells 3-7:1.
On base of white oak. Leaves 1-2 mm. Costa may be forked near tip. Leaves ligulate from rounded base, rounded apex. Cells round, pluripapillose.
On calcareous rock wall. Leaves 2-4 mm. Leaves with double teeth, costa percurrent. Cells measure 20 microns; cells near costa larger than at margin. M. ambiguum.
