pretty sure this is bipinnatifida; rather tall; compared to pennsylvania the inflorescence not conspicuously glandular, leaflet lobes longer and deeper cleft/divided;
both species with pinnately compound leaves with narrowly revolute margins and grayish tomentose below, cleft stipules, and sepals a bit longer than petals;
Photo 2 is a crop to show just the P. bipinnatifida.
Photo 3 is the whole photo showing how this P. bipinnatifida plant was growing right with a P. pulcherrima plant (palmate bicolour shallowly-toothed leaves).
EDIT: I think I've properly identified this now as Xanthisma spinulosum.
Stumped as to specific species, the leaves are throwing me for a loop. Plant appears smaller than the other H. hirsutissima in the surrounding area, but the calyx looks very similar so classifying it as a member of Heterotheca... The plant smells very strongly; pleasant, almost like sagebrush. Smell is also similar to the other H. hirsutissima nearby.
I spent a lot of time chasing dogweeds and tarweeds as well, but couldn't find anything I thought fit. Definitely need help with this one!
Interestingly, there have always been at least two of the same species of beetle present on the flowers when I visit this plant, as seen in the third picture of the set. Not sure what this species it is, but I've personally never seen it before.
