A botanical bigfoot. Kevin Kreucher went up and took pictures while we were there, and they match this blurry thing pretty nicely.

Red-Black Striped Snake

Jepson eflora says that this species is distinguished from mohavensis by the shape of the pappus. The final photo is by Tom Chester showing the pappus from this plant which is oblong with fringed top.
