Located on old hardwood bark on dead tree near Biscuit Brook, Big Indian Wilderness, Catskill Forest Preserve, NY.
A sample of this lichen was collected under special permit from the New York State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and sent to the New York Botanical Garden in New York City. It was identified by Dr. James C. Lendemer as:
Parmotrema margaritatum (Hue) Hale
and retained in the Steere Herbarium. Sample BIS-1026, catalogNumber 04275225

These plants have survived the winter and are growing at the same location where I first observed them last summer. The nearby trail has expanded somewhat with the result that the plants appear to have been trod upon by hikers and dogs. The City has posted a notice of a construction project to shore up the banks of nearby Yellow Creek which may result in further disturbance of these plants or their destruction.
