Ploughed sand on the edge of the estuary
Large stretches of the intertidal sand along the margins of the estuary disturbed when exposed during low tide. On very close observation showed the digging was being done by a multitude of tiny (4 to 5 mm long) sand coloured crickets. They were very skittish and jumped as soon as disturbed.

I've never seen this behavior before. I thought it was a turtle at first glance. It stayed in this position until I had completely passed by, them emerged an flew toward the clutch observed nearby.

This was a very small grasshopper, nymph prob, about 1cm long. Found on the creek bank. But I don't see anything like it, except maybe some kind of Spur-throat.

One of the best weeks/weekends ever at the Texas Master Naturalist State Conference down in the Lower Rio Grande Valley!
Today was especially fun -- all day out in the field to observe the eclipse and engage with nature with like 300 other naturalists! Awesome. :)

Three of these "sandgropers" (Australian name) were found in fine sand while excavating the mound of a tuco-tuco (Ctenomys haigii). This is the same microhabitat where I found two other specimens of this species in Neuquen Province. This group of orthoperteroid insects are considered to be the most strongly modified morphologically for a subterranean life (Houston, 2007).

Not quite sure what this is, but I dissected it from inside of a native centipede (Nadabius pullus) that was collected in May 2005. Documented parasites of lithobiomorph centipedes include Tachinids (Loewia) and Proctotrupids (Phaneroserphus), but I'm not sure if either of those are what I've got here. The parasite is about 5 mm long and 1.5 mm wide and was taking up the whole body cavity between segments 8-12. Parts of its body were sticking out of the spiracles of the centipede before dissection. Any help in narrowing this thing down would be appreciated! I'm assuming an arthropod based on what typically infests lithobiomorphs, but even that could be wrong.
