Small but strong, when she sets her mind on it she can do incredible things. This small ant has found food and is delivering it back to her colony. The food in this case is the carcass of a worker of New Zealand’s largest native ant (Austroponera sp.)

Antlion pits in loose dirt in a large Leioproctus bee colony. Several bees seen struggling in pits and being dragged under by antlion larvae. Dead bees and a dead millipede seen in other pits. I dug a larva out for a photo.

Roadside on the Barnicoat Walkway ca.150m east of the start of the mtb rack "Involution" and 30m east of the gate heading towards Jenkins Hill.
On red beech (Fuscospora fusca).
Inspected at intervals since original post. Latest inspection on 07/11/2019 revealed presence of flower buds. Photos with date stamp loaded here.
Checked a few times since 07/11/2019 with no apparent progress. Checked today (29/11/2019), found two buds noticeably longer and with distinct colour. One photo loaded.

A hairy snail is too marvellous not to share. On the edge of a magnificent alluvial terrace covered in podocarp forest (Shakespeare Flat) just as you start to climb up into mixed forest. The leaf behind is a Hoheria giving some idea of the lowland / fertile sort of forest we were in.
