Growing under regenerating kahikatea canopy, wet soil. Not one I've seen before.
WIld! bird dispersed into the native broom border in the bot gardens!!!
Odd-looking Typha in this retention basin. Very lax leaves. Short, dark inflorescences. The AI likes T. latifolia when I include suggestions not seen nearby. I plan to collect some sometime.
Pohutakawa purchased from The Plant Company in Napier. Arrived at my door this morning. I have placed them back in their boxes awaiting instructions for treatment or disposal
Growing in the grass of a dry north facing hillside above Boulder Bay.
Flowering. Flower colour yellow.
18A Revel Ave, Mount Roskill, Auckland 1041. At light.
Although this is my first observation for this species, I may have ignored/overlooked it in the past.
@jon_sullivan? Best photos I could get as it was in someone’s front yard. First record in Rolleston?
Phoenix Palm in an overgrown property at Waikawa Harbour Southland. Possibly the southernmost palm in NZ. This is further south than Bluff where there are nikaus and Fan palms. Used to be a nikau on Ulva Island, Stewart Island, but I think it has disappeared
Rescued from a cat, unharmed. Flew away happily during the photo shoot.
Scattered plants along edge of footpath. Same plants seen by Jon Sullivan yesterday. Need to be controlled asap. https://inaturalist.nz/observations/139094019
I've monitored this species in Whanganui (the first place it was recorded in NZ) for> 20 years and it has not spread far beyond the early sites, within about 1 km radius. Its spread has been much slower than I'd anticipated. No-one, apart from some householders, has attempted to control it. However, any new site, like Banks Peninsula, should try and eliminate it asap.
Really beautiful flatworm. Under a rock.
@stephen_thorpe @clinton @predomalpha Any ideas on this beauty?
A few late stage (megalopae) ones near shore.
~3mm long
Drosera (see other observation from today) found growing among oi oi with Drosera capensis and another as yet unidentified species (see other observation from today). Location only partially accurate, need to review this as the app didn't log it but have GPS coords.
Mass stranding with millions spread along a long exposed coast line
Found in a bird bath, still alive. Moth is in water, first image.
Eight plants - four with immature inflorescences, one also with a previous seasons inflorescence (withered) attached. Growing on steep. eroding clay at top of cliff face under pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa).
Interesting. A couple of weeks ago, three pines were planted to replace one which had been felled. Today I saw a Steel blue ladybeetle on one of the newly planted pines.
I have lived opposite Hagley Park for 22 years. I have never seen a steel blue in my garden nor in the park. I checked the other two newly planted pines and found another steel blue on one of those.
Please excuse the jar.... it's going on a little trip.
This wasp was searching between the slats of teak chairs on the balcony. Not chewing the wood like other wasps do.
A blanket octopus, found washed up on the beach in excellent condition. I froze it and Te Papa had it couriered down for their collection.
Scattered patches on the now very weedy Mount Maunganui dunes.
Substantial patches naturalised in dunes, among marram and Carpobrotus iceplant.
Mites on Sorensenella harvestman. Harvestman observation here: https://inaturalist.nz/observations/122918749
Scattered plants along small waterway/drain.
Has finished flowering but not sure if it will set viable seed.
There were about ten of these yellow wasps flying about over a Griselinia litoralis tree in the park. I've not seen this species before.
A single plant growing with Galega officinalis and exotic grasses at the end of River Road beside the Waiohine River
GWA on Rosa rubiginosa (several plants observed with them feeding)
GWA on Ileostylus micranthus. Not sure this has been observed before!?
'woof' at about 32 seconds in. I'm pretty sure this bark (lifted from local dogs?) was added to local repertoire just a few years back, but perhaps it is used elsewhere too?
wild in a rough between the church and neighbour. Seedlings present.
S. columbaria subsp ochroleuchon, I think. Sowing itself in and around a planting of Muehlenbeckia axillaris on a very dry slope.
The whole hillside was covered in Kiwifruit vine/s. The area probably covered 900msq. It was smothering many trees and shrubs, both native and introduced. I have never seen a bigger vine.
Counted 12 coppers on patch of Muehlenbeckia complexa on outskirts of Lincoln
Growing in sheep paddock, in sandy soil close to somewhat boggy area.
Fruit very pineapple-like, but plant has 'bushy' habit with soft fleshy leaves. No sign of spikes.
May be an escapee but no other specimens immediately visible in nearby garden.
Backyard, Karori, Zealandia fence in the background. Trailcam photo (still frames from a 10 second video capture).
