These Spring Canyon Barrel Cacti grow in a very different environment than what I have seen above Penasquitos Canyon. There is a large population on top of a hot, dry south-facing rocky hill above Penasquitos Canyon. In Spring Canyon, they grow in the sandy loam soils of the canyon bottom. Nearby plants include Prunus ilicifolia, which like a little extra water.
