A quiet walk it the woods is often rewarding, especially if you find a patch of Calypso Orchids. Such was the case last weekend when I strolled through a pine forest along the Whitemud River north of Peace River.

First record for the site. Last few shots show the cover object and the habitat. The "log" was small, light, hollowed-out, and barely in contact with the ground. When I moved it, a stream of tiny ants poured out. I was expecting such a light piece of cover to maybe hide a Dekay's Brownsnake, so this was a nice surprise. A rocky slope in an upland Acer-Ostrya woodland in August doesn't exactly scream "salamander", but this is an unusual species.
