First island record! First seen from the catchment pad at 10:50, flying roughly 50 meters above the southwest side of Lighthouse Hill. Initially identified as a Swallow-tailed Kite due to its extremely distinctive plumage and shape, particularly the contrasting black and white underwings, long pointed wingtips, and deeply forked tail. Briefly harassed by only two Western Gulls. Immediately photographed as the bird circled twice and stooped once. The bird then flew west towards houses, where several people observed it continuing to fly low. It began circling and rising, and flew east away from the island at 10:55.

Found by Lauren Chan in creosote scrub. Caught and handled under permit. Photo 4 shows it with another individual caught nearby in the dunes.

Rough Greensnake catching an orbweaver spider. It got close to the web and then stayed there for what felt like 10 minutes (not sure it was waiting to figure out how to catch the spider or because I had disturbed it). After a while, it finally caught the spider and seemed to have no trouble eating it. My first time seeing a wild snake catch its prey!

A pair of mallards honked at it until it got out of the water, then it swam up the lake to this log, went inside, and then popped out of this hole. Observed with @micro_ecologist

Eating leopard frog. Didn't see the outcome, but the frog looked a little big for this intrepid young water snake, and I don't think it would have been able to swallow it from behind.

Some type of warbler? We were doing survey in the middle of the ocean near Dry Tortugas National Park and this little buddy hung out with us for 4-5 hours before regaining his energy and continuing on his way to wherever he was going. Gave it water - what a day!
