I'm on the road and don't have much access to internet, but I thought I'd upload these observations from a few nights ago of a genus near (?) and dear (???) to my heart.

The extensive dark markings and all yellow ground color seem to point to H. cadaverosa, a species heretofore confined to the Rocky Mountain states.
I'm posting two different individuals (based on "fingerprinting of wing patterns"). I may have had more but they were moving around a lot.

the female below is a festive TB. There were other festive TBs all around, but no other species. The sand was wet from recent rains and it appears that this is what is on the back of dark TB. The female festive will be in the next submission, after the dark one left. The dark one did not look like a punctured TB to me.

Observation for kittiwake in center.
Saw many 1000s of kittiwakes, gulls, murres, cormorants. Also saw a single shearwater (not sure if sooty or shorty) and some dark auklets.

I came across this unusual scene while hiking back to my car this afternoon. What I think is happening here is that the racer probably tried to predate the alligator lizard, only to have the alligator lizard clampdown on the snake's head. When I came upon them, the snake wasn't moving much. I sat and watched for a bit, but then noticed a mountain biker coming down the trail. When I stood up so he could see me, I must have startled the lizard, because all of a sudden the snake got free, and zipped off into the tall grass on the side of the trail. After a second or two, the alligator lizard also dashed off, albeit in the other direction. All in all, it was quite a surprising encounter.
(@gregpauly, I thought you might be interested in this one, since it showsthe jaw strength of a Northern Alligator lizard from a different angle than the one we know from mating lizards.
