Ventura County, like many of California's wonderful counties, is home to many different ecosystems. Ranging from open ocean to oak savanna and coastal scrub to coniferous forest, these ecosystems are capable of harboring a myriad of diversity within a vast array of habitats.
Located west of Los Angeles County, Ventura County encompasses a total of 2,208.20 sq mi (1,845.30 sq mi of land and 362.90 sq mi of water). Elevations vary from sea level to 8831 ft at the peak of Mt. Pinos in the Chumash Wilderness of the southeastern portion of the Los Padres National Forest. Also included within the County are two of the Channel Islands Anacapa Island (the smallest) and San Nicholas Island (the most remote).
The goal of this project is simple, to catalog and share the amazing diversity of this section of California and the west coast.
