March 26th - Taeniaptera trivittata

We're happy to announce another online workshop! Here are the details:

This week we'll look at the Micropezidae and learn how to recognize the common species T. trivittata using the existing notes. I will also work on improving the notes and hopefully making a more formal resource.

As always, our meetings are completely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is vital for learning!

Please feel free to leave a comment to let us know if you plan to come! Questions are also welcome.

The Zoom meeting will open at 8 PM EDT on Sunday the 26th.

This T. trivittata was observed and recorded in our neighborhood, I think, in the 1930s under the name Calobatidae, in July, with the comment "Found in moist places where there is decaying matter for the larva to grow in." I'll hope to see it here this summer, after learning how to ID tonight. I checked ITIS for the synonyms but it's not easy to track. Maybe C.univitta? Anyhow, will look here for white protarsi in July.

@carol-in-maine Use Systema Dipterorum nomenclature search for Diptera names. ITIS is rather out of date for many.

Sorry I couldn't join in (again) last night. I had some fun today looking at the guide, though, and used it (in part) to go through the 'needs ID' Micropezidae in Canada today. Very helpful! One note worth adding which is useful for Taenioptera vs Rainieria is the shape of the dark patch on the wings, bulls-eye vs triangular.

I'll see about trying the guide out on US flies next. :-)

Many thanks,
Alison
