Just for reference, of the 760 species in the Cape Floristic Region, 170 are in the book "Ericas of the Fynbos", 635 are on iNaturalist here, and 760 are in the EEK (Erica Electronic Key).
But as a guide to the commoner species, this book will be indispensable.
Thanks, Tony. We interrogated iNat for the 200 most frequently posted species and used that to inform our selection of taxa for inclusion. Many iNat members generously allowed us to use their images, without which the book would not have been possible. We were also fortunate to have Ross Turner make many of his lovely images available too. Getting a handle on such a large genus is very difficult and we deliberately excluded most of the 'Minor' species from consideration, although we have a representative selection: their ID often requires dissection of the ovary! Colour forms are included for the variable species, and subspecies are listed and diagnosed. Also included are some of the odder-looking ericas to give a more complete picture of the variation in the genus. We focused on devising a way of splitting the species into groups to facilitate identification and to highlight the characters that are important. So its also an general introduction to the field of Erica taxonomy. I hope it proves useful.
