The Baldwin Hills are found in urban Los Angeles, between Culver City and Inglewood, with sweeping views across the entire Los Angeles Basin. They are an island of natural and modified habitats in the middle of the city. Part of the area is in parkland and a significant portion is used for oil and gas exploration. This project is a companion to a project to update the biota of the Baldwin Hills for the Baldwin Hills Conservancy and the Baldwin Hills Regional Conservation Authority. The project is being undertaken by the University of Southern California Spatial Sciences Institute, with collaboration from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and other experts. The purpose of this project on iNaturalist is to harness the power of the hundreds of thousands of person-hours spent by visitors to public lands in the park to improve knowledge of the species diversity and distribution within these lands.
