I've been watching/photographing the birds around me since February 2016. That fall I added butterflies and moths. In August 2021 I joined iNaturalist and broadened my interests.

I am retired now but spent my working life either in the US Air Force or working on/around Air Force Bases. Thirty-one of those years were with the space program. (I was a support guy, not an engineer or scientist.) I can look out my back patio and see launches from Cape Canaveral SFS and Kennedy Space Center, FL which are about 10 miles away.

After my initial enthusiasm for reporting everything onto iNaturalist, I'm primarily (thought not exclusively) reporting observations in several areas:

  • Four sanctuaries managed by my county's Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) program, each of which is covered by an iNaturalist project -- Ulumay, Sams House at Pine Island, Helen & Allan Cruickshank, and Enchanted Forest.
  • Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, another iNaturalist project.
  • Brevard County Waste Disposal Site, not an iNaturalist project but I'd not expected such a diversity of birds, wildflowers and other wildlife there.
  • Birds and butterflies I've photographed for upload to other sites, including eBird.org and butterfliesandmoths.org.

Besides nature, I have two other hobbies.

  • First is genealogy. I have traced my wife's ancestry back to Charlemagne, the Frankish king crowned Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day in 800 AD. I also traced one of my stepsons to Courtney Babbidge Jr, a Revolutionary soldier at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781.
  • Second, I track the movement of the US currency I handle through "Where's George?" I have entered into the online data base, stamped and then spent over 290K bills of all denominations. I have gotten reports back from all 50 states (plus DC) and 100+ foreign countries.
