Royal National Park: Uloola Walking Track & Karloo Walking Track 28/12/2023

After some rain on the previous day, I went to the Royal National Park on a walk with a few mates. Getting off at Waterfall Station, we entered the track.
After walking a short distance, we entered a fire trail/vehicle track, where it was very sunny. This was when we first spotted some Drosera spatulata. This section of the track was somewhat relaxed as it was very easy to traverse. The sides of the track were covered with various plants, from Angophora hispida, to various types of Proteaceae plants such as Banksia serrata (not shown in observations), Lambertia formosa, and Hakea gibbosa.
After walking for a while and entering the campsite at Uloola Falls, the area was much more shady, and I spotted a few Cryptostylis there. When we reached the falls, there were an abundance of plants there. We had a quick lunch before we headed off onto the Karloo Walking Track.

There were also a variety of plants along the Karloo Walking Track, such as Hakea teretifolia, and Banksia oblongifolia. After almost stepping on a large snake, we eventually went through some boggy sections of the track before we had to descend down towards the Karloo Pools.

At the Karloo Pools, there were a lot of people, as well as some interesting plants. Crossing the stream without getting wet was a challenge, but I eventually managed to do it. The last part of the track was quite steep and tiring, but we managed to finish it without an issue.

This was a good walk and I recommend people to go on these tracks when they get the chance to as there are plenty of amazing plants to see.

A small shrub found near the starting point of the Uloola track. The follicles are round and woody, with 2 horns. Leaves were cylindrical and appears to lack any hairs.

Unsure whether it is H. bakeriana or H. sericea. According to Les Robinson’s 2003 book “Field Guide to the Native Plants of Sydney”, H. bakeriana is distributed north of Sydney, but the follicles appear to match the illustration of H. bakeriana.

A small shrub found on the side of the track. Many individuals of this specimen appear to be developing flower buds.

Looking at the flower spike, it appears to be Persoonia pinifolia when comparing it to the illustration in Les Robinson’s 2003 book “Field Guide to the Native Plants of Sydney”. However, the flowering time does not appear to match with that in the book as it states ‘March – May’, but other online sources state this species can flower during summer.

The flowers appears to have recently closed and the ovaries appear to be swelling. A single large leaf was present at the base of the plant. This matches with the description of Cryptostylis in Les Robinson’s 2003 book “Field Guide to the Native Plants of Sydney”.

Because the flower has already closed, it is difficult to determine what species this is, my guess would be Cryptostylis subulata as later on the hike, they were present in different locations.
