Maroubra Beach and Malabar Headland National Park (Casual trip): 22/2/2024

These observations were taken after I had completed a short uni field trip at the South Maroubra Rockpools. The first area that caught my interest was the regeneration area on the sand dunes. There were lots of shrubs and sprawling plants holding the dune together, such as Acacia longifolia sophorae. Nearby, there were also patches of bitou bush that covered large areas.

Even though the sun was out and it was quite hot, I decided to take a quick walk into the Malabar Headland National Park. Along the Boora Point Waling Track, there were a bunch of shrubs, including Westringia fruticosa and Leptospermum laevigatum. It was also interesting to see Banksia integrifolia, B. ericifolia, and B. serrata growing in the form of a low, sprawling shrub since these species are often small trees when planted out in suburban neighbourhoods.

Eventually, I reached a spot called "Magic Point", which was a rocky area that had some nice views. There were also an assortment of plants growing amongs the gaps and soil pockets in the sandstone that was there. I had lunch there before I decided to head back towards Maroubra as I needed to head home.

Even though this was a relatively short trip, I was still able to spot many interesting plants.

Royal National Park: Uloola Walking Track & Karloo Walking Track 28/12/2023

After some rain on the previous day, I went to the Royal National Park on a walk with a few mates. Getting off at Waterfall Station, we entered the track.
After walking a short distance, we entered a fire trail/vehicle track, where it was very sunny. This was when we first spotted some Drosera spatulata. This section of the track was somewhat relaxed as it was very easy to traverse. The sides of the track were covered with various plants, from Angophora hispida, to various types of Proteaceae plants such as Banksia serrata (not shown in observations), Lambertia formosa, and Hakea gibbosa.
After walking for a while and entering the campsite at Uloola Falls, the area was much more shady, and I spotted a few Cryptostylis there. When we reached the falls, there were an abundance of plants there. We had a quick lunch before we headed off onto the Karloo Walking Track.

There were also a variety of plants along the Karloo Walking Track, such as Hakea teretifolia, and Banksia oblongifolia. After almost stepping on a large snake, we eventually went through some boggy sections of the track before we had to descend down towards the Karloo Pools.

At the Karloo Pools, there were a lot of people, as well as some interesting plants. Crossing the stream without getting wet was a challenge, but I eventually managed to do it. The last part of the track was quite steep and tiring, but we managed to finish it without an issue.

This was a good walk and I recommend people to go on these tracks when they get the chance to as there are plenty of amazing plants to see.

Lake Parramatta: Lake Circuit (Casual Trip) 19/11/2023

On Sunday afternoon, I went on a casual walk through Lake Circuit track in Lake Parramatta Reserve, which is located near Parramatta CBD. The main goal of the walk was to observe the Dipodium variegatum orchids in bloom, as I have seen these plants in the area in previous years.
During the first half of the walk, a healthy population of D. variegatum was observed amongst the leaf litter of tall Eucalyptus trees. I only photographed a few for the observations. As I went further into the track, I could no longer spot anymore D. variegatum.
Throughout the track, there were an abundance of Stylidium plants that were in full bloom. As I am still getting the observations IDed, I am unsure as to whether they are S. graminifolium or S. productum.
In terms of woody plants, lots of Lambertia formosa were blooming. The individual shrubs were not large in size, but most of them already contained flowers and follicles on them.
Being an easily accessible location, and a place where I often see many people go for quick casual walks, it is pleasing to say that healthy populations of these plants, especially considering how close this area is to a CBD location.
Other plants that I photographed on the walk are all provided in the observations for this post.

This is my first time posting using the journal feature, please let me know how I can improve these posts. Constructive feedback is welcomed.
