2021 iNaturalist Montana Meetups

If you were tagged in this post, it's because I recognized your name on the Montana iNat leaderboard from all of the wonderful hours I've spent looking at observations in the state. It's been a pleasure seeing your posts and interacting about identifications over the past couple years.

But something has been missing. It's missing now, here at the end of 2020, more than ever, and I want to help fill it.

I want to invite you all to the first ever (to my knowledge) iNaturalist Montana meetup(s). We have people across the state who are curious and/or proficient in all sorts of biological disciplines. We have a platform that helps us engage with nature through observations and identifications. I'm used to going out alone with my phone and getting nerdy with nature, as most of you probably are, but let's be a pack!

I don't have times or dates, but please let me know if you are interested. I might get some contact information or start up something on a social media platform just to help facilitate communication and planning. Would you do this for me?

1) If you are interested, message me your email address or email me at tsougst [at] gmail [dot] com and I'll put you on a list. Of course, you can opt out at any time, and I won't sell or abuse your info, blah, blah.

2) If you are interested in FACILITATING or LEADING a group (not as the professional guide, just as a point of contact), please let me know. And if so, let me know a few ideas on where you would like to do it.

3) If there are platforms or tools that are especially useful to get the word out and coordinate people, please tell me. I don't have a lot of experience doing this, but I know its out there. Mailchimp newsletters, FB, Twitter, Instagram, meetup.com, flyers at coffee shops.... I'm not sure what the best practices are these days.

And, of course, if you have any other suggestions for the effort, please just reach out and let me know. And if you are involved with any local nature centers (ahem @allisondejong... @heathererb ...), let me know if this kind of effort could interface with your programs.
