Equisetum hyemale affine / Equisetum praealtum

E. hyemale ssp./var. affine = E. praealtum*,
North America, Mexico, Central America in Guatemala.
E. hyemale ssp./var. hyemale = E. hyemale,
Europe and Asia to northwestern China in Xinjiang.

The two subspecies differ morphologically in height, stem colour
and width and numbers of ridges on the sheath teeth.

*E. praealtum may be treated as a separate species. [Christenhusz et al. 2019]
However, if one prefers to keep this taxon as a subspecies, the correct name
would be E. hyemale subsp. affine.

Dear Radek, when you added the separation between both types of E. hyemale in North America and main part of Eurasia, i repeatedly wondered why the East Asian population in Korea, NE China, far east Siberia and Japan to Kamtchatka, is not included.
As far as i know it may be included within the nominative ssp. hyemale, or separated as distinct ssp. (or even species).
Is there a certain reason why you don't mention the East Asian type?

You could set links to my photos of E. hyemale ssp. affine planted within dense growth of the nominative type at flickr.
I could sort some instructive photos into a separate album to show the difference in sizes.

Erwin, of course you are right, we will see if the future brings good publications that I can cite in this particular narrow specialist field.
Regarding your great photos, of course I will add them wherever I can with great pleasure. I'm waiting for links.

Dear Radek, for a layperson can you recommend a guide in English to Equisetum? I thank you for your help in identifying my own few observations, which has helped to spark my interest in these fascinating plants.

This portal is truly the best place to explore taxonomic diagnostics; you can learn a lot from careful observation of well-marked records; in the basic and detailed scope, this portal is sufficient; for those more interested in the subject, I recommend this link: http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=10315 ; in the specialist field, I recommend only scientific publications and studies; unfortunately, there are glaring errors on many scientific websites and even in publications, but that is another topic; greetings.
