The City Nature Challenge starts Friday!

Hey everyone!

The City Nature Challenge is back again this year from April 29-May 2! Like previous years, the challenge area is the county of Philadelphia plus all counties that directly share a border with Philadelphia. This includes Montgomery, Bucks, and Delaware counties in PA and Camden, Gloucester, and Burlington counties in NJ. During the CNC last year, the Greater Philadelphia Area did pretty well with just under 20k observations, 2219 species, and 966 observers (let's get more than 1000 people participating this year!). Congratulations to @annebekker who became the first person to cross 400 species during a Philly CNC. And just like last year, a shoutout to @srall who participated in both the NYC and Philly CNC efforts and ended up with the 2nd most observations in both Philly and NYC! Can anybody beat Anne's and Sara's totals this year?

This year, we have some group activities like guided walks (most require registration) but we are still encouraging individuals or small groups to go out on their own and make observations. The CNC is not being pitched as a competition again this year, but rather as a collaborative effort where cities around the world work together to document biodiversity in urban areas. But individual cities are encouraged to do mini-competitions with each other.

I'm tagging all of you here because you are one of the top observers in our region (either all-time or recently) and we would love to have your help in making even more observations during this 4 day period at the end of the month. And to make sure we get as many species as possible, I've made a simple website that shows you all the species that have been reported in our region during April and May, but not yet seen during the CNC: http://targets.cncphilly.org/. The species are organized in descending order of how many observations have been made for that species. As people make observations, they will fall off that list every 30 minutes or so.

We would also love your help in spreading the word about the CNC among your family and friends. You can also tag them in the comments here.

Here are some useful links with more info:

Main CNC website: http://citynaturechallenge.org/
Last year's results: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2021

Thanks for documenting the biodiversity of our region and we hope you'll help us during the CNC as well.

PS: I know some of you aren't in the area anymore or are away during the CNC, but we'd still appreciate it if you can spread the word to everyone you know. Thank you!

Thanks for your enthusiasm and organizational skills @navin_sasikumar !

FWIW there was a thread on the iNat forum a while back about good birding and iNat spots in and around Philly, one person has a whole database of interesting places. This year might try to explore some locations I haven't visited....

You beat me to posting it! Here's my latest post from that thread. Please let me know if you have additions or suggestions!

An awesome community resource @michaelpirrello and one I plan on using!

Thank you, Matt! I've seen that list and helped Michael (also tagged in this post) with some of the spots in Philadelphia county. That's a really useful list to have especially for the CNC. And I see your extensive list in the forum post too - that's very useful. Thank you!

Oops, I should have refreshed the page before I posted. :) Thanks so much for organizing that list @michaelpirrello!

I'll be hosting two informal gatherings during the CNC:

Sunday, May 1 at 10 am at Whitesbog Historic Village, 120 West Whites Bog Rd., Browns Mills, NJ (Burlington Co.)

Monday, May 2 at 9 am at Giving Pond, 1068 River Rd., Upper Black Eddy, PA (Bucks Co.)

We'll be gathering to look for diverse species for an hour or two and sharing interesting finds. If you'd like to join me, just send me a message through iNat

If anyone wants to do double duty, the Bucks County Audubon Society is currently conducting a biodiversity inventory for their Honey Hollow Revisited project (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/honey-hollow-watershed-natural-resource-inventory). If you join the project and observe there during the CNC, it will count for both.

@srall Ooh, that sounds great, Sara. I love both those places. I'm really glad you are joining the Philly area again this year. I know you said informal, but do you want me to put it up on the CNC Philly website?

Thank you for organizing this! This will be my first CNC, and I'm excited to see how it goes! :)

@mbwildlife Excellent! You've been racking up some serious observation numbers, so I'm excited to have you participate this year! Let's get Philly into the top 10!

Thanks so much, @srall. I've added it to our website now I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you are not only taking part but also leading trips. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for bringing the CNC Philly to my attention! I'll do my best to get out there this weekend. I do have some spots I haven't hit up yet for spring ephemerals. @srall and @annebekker great work last year!!
