This strikenly-colored mouse was foraging around and under the large rocks bordering the edge of this meadow (picture 4).
This mouse was found in the debris along the edge of a small lagoon about 0.5 km NW of Parinacota. Picture 4 shows the arid, sparsely vegetated Altiplano grassland where the animal lived before it died and desiccated.
Although A. jelskii was not reported from this part of Chile until recently, I have found it at two locations and there are reports and pictures of them from two other localities in this same region.
