Is something taking a long time to process or did something go wrong here that as of when I write this it went from 150k input records to 15k output records?

Just to clarify, it is not just a display issue here, if you use the explore tool and search for tyrannidae records in Canada it returns fewer than 500 records.

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=6712&subview=grid&taxon_id=980017

There are individual species with more records in Canada than that. The taxon page for Tyrannidae also reports way too few observations.

I think I misidentified an Eastern Phoebe as a Tyrant Flycatcher. I was corrected by some naturalists and agreed with them. I don't know what to do about this taxon split.

Yeah, looks like roughly 90% of the observations under Tyrannidae no longer show up when using explore to find Tyrannidae

@loarie just making sure you saw this and were aware of any issues. Several days out and it has not self resolved and is clear there are multiple other families of birds with the same issue.

thanks for the mention - we should all be on the look out for bugs - I'll investigate this a bit later tonight

@loarie - it looks like this is close to but not finished sorting itself out. The inactive taxa is still showing some observations, but around 17k now, way down from the 130k it was earlier. I assume whatever had the job queue backed up is resolving itself. Presumably the other 17k will continue to move over, or if as you noted in the Pica pica change, if the backlog is cleared, should we be concerned about there still being stuff under the old Tyrannidae ?

It seems like it may be a slightly different issue since the Pica pica was changing ID's, this is just changing the parent of taxa ?

We found a bug in https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_splits/57605 that caused the split to crash halfway through (somehow there was an ID of Pica Pica with no observation [shouldn't happen] and this caused the split to crash). We're running it again now.

Re: This change, it doesn't look like there are any observations of Tyrannidae 15984 and there are only 24 IDs - but it looks like those are all from people who opted out of automatic taxon change updates to their IDs, e.g. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/20092568
So I think in terms of the database, this Tyrannidae split did not crash and worked properly.
iNaturalist uses a thing called ElasticSearch to make data from the database quickly available - I think the issues we're seeing here is a bug or some weird lag where ElasticSearch is no longer in sync with the database. We're currently looking into why these index lags/bugs.
