Lab 2 Journal Entry - Celine

The species Impatiens Pallida, common name Pale jewelweed, is in the kingdom Plantae, phylum Magnoliophyta (Flowering plants), class Magnoliopsida (Dicotyledons), order Ericales, family Balsaminaceae (Touch-me-not family), and genus Impatiens.

A common adaptation in most of the observed species in this project is the presence of nectar and bright petals to attract pollinators. The colourful petals and scent of the sugar-rich liquid are energetically expensive to produce but increase the reproduction of the plant by attracting insects and animals. Pollinators transfer pollen between plants as they collect nectar allowing for cross-pollination.

A unique adaptation of Impatiens Pallida is the presence of cleistogamous flowers. These self-fertilizing flowers have the ability to produce seeds without cross-pollination. These cleistogamous flowers are very small meaning compared to the normal flowers, less energy is required for the plant to grow them.

Allium tuberosm (Chinese Chives) is in the kingdom plantae, family Amartyllidaceae, and genus Allium. It is in subgenus Butomissa (Salisb.) N. Friesen.

An adaptation that nearly all the plants in our project share, is that they are brightly coloured in order to attract pollinators. For flowers to reproduce, they must be pollinated. Therefore, being brightly colored is advantageous.

A unique adaptation of Allium tuberos it blooms later in the season than many other flowering plants. This gives it a greater chance of being pollinated as there is less competition from other types of plants.
