BioBlitz results!
Thanks so much everyone for joining our spring BioBlitz! It was such a great event, with perfect weather and beautiful wildflowers. It was nice to be back at this great park:last year we had to cancel our spring event here, like all our other events. This year we were able to adapt the event for COVID restrictions, and still have 61 people exploring the park safely together. Even though it was a rather large event, it was only about half the size of the event we held at the same location 2 years earlier, with 1,772 observations of 310 species - https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/almaden-quicksilver-spring-2019-bioblitz
In any case, this year we documented over 230 species, most of them plants - over 500 observations of over 110 species were documented! Some of the plants already had galls or leaf miners, which were responsible for some of the many arthropod observations we made - over 200!
We documented birds carrying horsehair to their nest, and others catching some of the many caterpillars from the trees. Many of us saw or at least heard the turkeys foraging the grassland. Did you know that you can document bird calls and share them on iNaturalist?
Not too many reptiles were out, but a few people were lucky enough to see (and even photograph) a Western Skink - a beautiful skink with a blue tail!
