I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Hawaii.

I am also a Research Botanist at the University and Jepson Herbaria at UC Berkeley and a National Geographic Explorer. I am interested in ecology and evolutionary biology, with a focus on botany. My research and fieldwork has taken me to Latin America and the Pacific, recently collecting ferns and documenting biodiversity in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Fiji.

I earned my doctorate at the University of Vermont where I studied the evolution of ferns in the Barrington-Sundue Lab. My focus is on the family Thelypteridaceae, with an emphasis on systematics, biogeography and taxonomy of the ~1200 species in that family.

I grew up in Petoskey, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan with a BFA and BGS in 2005, and from Northern Michigan University with an MS in 2012. My masters research focused on the flora and ecology of a neotropical savanna in the Caribbean of Honduras. I am on faculty at the University of Michigan Biological Station, where I teach botany and botanical illustration.
