I am a semi-retired medical doctor. When not practicing I enjoy getting out in nature, which I consider to be good therapy and a great escape from the problems that people bring to me. My naturalist interests run all the way back to childhood in the deep south state of Mississippi. My interest in fungi began when I took advantage of an opportunity to take my family morel foraging with Alexander Smith in Michigan. As you might expect we found lots of morels.
I have subsequently furthered my study of fungi by collecting in a number of states, but for the past 30 years I have lived in Washington. Though a member of the Puget Sound Mycological Society for nearly 30 years, much of my foraging has been on my own. Until recently I traveled throughout the United States and other countries photographing birds, with a life list of US birds that stands at 725. But in the past few years I have trained my photography more and more on fungi. I currently have photos of well over 400 Northwest species (plus thousands of bird photos) on a web-hosting sight that can be accessed at https://www.pbase.com/lawrencemmartin. Mushroom photography benefits from the fact that unlike birds, the subjects don't move. But in many other ways it is more difficult. I am working on improving my skills. I am particularly fond of foraging/shooting in old growth forests, especially on the Olympic Peninsula. When not photographing, I enjoy playing bridge, playing piano, fly fishing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends
