The Johnson Nature Center is a 40 acre preserve, staffed by agricultural specialists and naturalists. Our preserve is a habitat of wetlands, forests, and oak openings (prairie). Our property restoration revolves around Southeast Michigan's original habitat, before white settlers = prairie. With the help of volunteers and the community, we continue to plant native plants and remove invasive plants (buckthorn, bittersweet, dogbane, beggar's lice, etc). We see numerous bird species (May 2020 bird banding we document 76 total species observed and 105 birds were banded, representing 34 species) and we've done frog and toad surveys for our local watershed organization, Friends of the Rouge (four different frog species and one toad species).
