I have been director of the Rhode Island Natural History Survey since 2004. I grew up exploring the woods, fields, and shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where I began collecting insects at age 13 and still do occasional field work. My natural historical interests are broad and ever-changing but tend toward invertebrates. My work at the Survey focuses on promotion of community engagement in environmental science and management and of scientific approaches to conservation. By training, I am an archaeologist, with fieldwork in Europe and Alaska. I’ve also directed a stamp museum and taught graduate level museum studies. I have hosted documentary videos and published on topics including educational enrichment, science communication, prehistoric archaeology, and museum studies. I live on an old farm in Wakefield, R.I.
