I am an Entomologist with a focus on myrmecology, specifically in the areas of systematics and ecology. Although my initial interest was in studying birds, I eventually immersed myself in the fascinating world of entomology. While I remain a passionate birder and currently serve as the president of the Hampton Roads Bird Club, I also hold the position of Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Hampton University, a small private HBCU located in eastern Virginia. In my role, I teach courses covering biodiversity, entomology, zoology, and conservation biology.

One of my primary educational goals is to introduce students to the field and field research. I incorporate aspects of iNaturalist into all my courses, and I appreciate your understanding if you come across students who are just starting to explore plants or insects for the first time. I actively involve students in research projects, particularly in faunistics. My research lab focuses on invertebrate ecology in human-altered environments, with a primary emphasis on urban ecology themes. Our work revolves around altered habitats in Hampton Roads, conducting biodiversity surveys that explore phenology and functional diversity.

I have a deep passion for ant taxonomy and entomology as a whole, embodying a Victorian-era naturalist spirit. You might find me collecting insects, birdwatching, searching for pine cones, and exploring biota in the field.
