My family moved to Ouray Colorado in 1953 when I was three years old. Dad loved the mountains and had worked in some of the local mines in the late 1920s, We spent many weekends in the summer visiting old mines above timberline and traveling around the San Juan Mountains. I fell in love with the mountains too and wanted to know everything there was to know about nature. When I was 6 years old, I was given a huge hardcovered book "The Golden Treasury of Natural History" by Bertha Morris Parker, published in 1950. It had chapters on everything, plants, bugs, birds, snakes, mammals, dinosaurs, even the solar system. I must have read it a hundred times, and dreamed of being a naturalist. I still have the book, all tattered and worn, most of the information is hopelessly out of date, but I get a smile and a wonderful feeling when looking through it today.
I have lived in Denver since 1960. I was a hardcore birder in the 1990s and am working on regaining those skills. I am also interested in cacti and have grown many cactus and succulents for years and thrill at finding cacti when I travel in the western United States. I love photography and am highly skilled at photographing the exact spot where an animal was sitting just before it moved. I am enjoying iNaturalist and the iNaturalist community as they help me move toward the goal set when I was 6 to learn about everything in nature.
