Microfungus found on the underside of decaying hardwood branch lying on the ground in small mixed city woodlot. Colony visible as a brownish area (approx. 2 sq cm) that is fuzzy under hand lens magnification.
Common particularly in maple stands in this area.

Sporangia stalked, most less than 2 mm tall, nodding, gregarious. Spores about 5 microns in diameter, smooth (at 400X), colourless. Found on well decayed wood in swampy area of small city woodlot. Common but not easily seen because of its small size. The sporangium is covered with delicate membrane supported by larger ribs and delicate cross filaments. As the membrane wears away, the spores can be gradually or rapidly released by wind, vibration or water as they fall through the netlike structure.

Microscopic in size. Selected conidia measured 22.2 X 10, 22.5 X 7.5, 21 X 10, 20 X 9, and 24 X 10 microns.
Mature conidia have 3 septa. The two end cells are hyaline, the middle cells are mid to dark brown.
Conidia arise from the top of the conidiophore on slender, flexible denticles that allow the conidia to "droop" in small clusters.
A very common fungus that can be found throughout the year - even winter if decayed host wood is thawed and incubated in a moist chamber.

Small collection found on decorticated twig in duff layer. Measurements taken from two conidiophores: tall, with a white penicillate head at the apex, about 350 microns tall, 15 microns wide, coarsely verrucose, septate, metulae arising from just below the 4th apical septa, conidia 6-8 x 4-5 microns.
