Animals — humans and ravens included — inherit mitochondrial DNA from mothers. The mitochondrial DNA in ravens revealed a “deep genetic divergence between two different lineages,” Omland said.
The sudden move is important, environmentalists say, because hundreds of birds die at the Altamont each year after getting hit by wind turbine blades, colliding with windmills, or becoming trapped inside them.

The 10-pound male fox was captured on national forest land just outside of Lassen Volcanic National Park, near the town of Mineral. The fox was collared and released at the capture location, and CDFW biologists have been impressed by the distances it has regularly been covering despite rough terrain and high elevation.
