Notes on Replacing non-native plants with Texas native plants ....

FROM REDNAT (6/3/2022):

When replacing plants, I'd like to encourage you to seek out local native plants--those native to within 50-60 miles of where you live. They will be much better adapted to the soils and weather patterns--especially rainfall amounts--and thus more likely to survive long term. Too often box stores and places like Buchanan's sell plants from central and south Texas. Those species evolved for about half the rainfall we get in the Houston area and might only survive in raised beds.

The beauty of locally native plants is that you don't have to prepare a bed--just plunk them in at ground level. The best sources in this area are:

Audubon Natives Nursery - https://houstonaudubon.org/conservation/bird-friendly-communities/nursery.html
Greenstar Wetlands - https://greenstarwetlands.com/
Morning Star Prairie Plants - https://morningstarprairieplants.com/

There are spring and fall plant sales offered by Houston Arboretum & Nature Center and the Clear Lake Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

All of these gather seed from wild prairie remnants and grow them out for sale.

You can find information about recommended species for the Houston area at https://npsot.org/plant_lists/HoustonAreaList.pdf
